After Pablo Barrios scored in the first half for the Spanish tourists at the Stadio Olimpico, it appeared as though they would take all three points back to their country.

However, there were still 95 minutes left on the clock when the goalkeeper, who was 29 years old at the time, decided to join the assault in order to take one final attempt at a set piece.

The initial corner kick was cleared by the Atletico defense, but the ball went straight back to the player who took it, and they passed it on to Luis Alberto.

The attacker sent in a dangerous in-swinging cross from out on the left side of the field, and it sailed over everybody until the jumping Provedel met it and glanced home a header past his opponent, Jan Oblak, to stir chaotic scenes.

In spite of this, the Lazio hero was able to keep his cool as he just brushed away his advancing teammates and ran back into his own half of the field for the restart.

His incredible performance allowed him to become only the second goalie in the history of the Champions League to score during open play for their team. This achievement cemented his place in the annals of Champions League history.

Sinan Bolat, who played for Liège and scored a late equalizer for his team against AZ Alkmaar in the group stages back in December 2021, was the only other player to accomplish this feat.

As the video clip quickly went viral on social media, viewers could not believe what they were witnessing and could not stop talking about it.

One commentator even suggested that Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, got precisely what he deserved for moving forward Alvaro Morata back to the defense position.

They posted on Twitter that “This is exactly what you get for playing Morata as a 3rd center back you dinosaur of a manager.”

Someone else made the observation, “I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that a goalkeeper has such good timing and movement inside the penalty box.”

Another stunned fan exclaimed, “Insane,” before going on to say, “Maybe he could have been a striker under different life circumstances.”

A fellow fan once said, “Football is the greatest sport ever, and no other one even comes close.”

While still another author stated, “He must have been fantasizing about this his entire life.” What an Effort!”
